KARNAK graduates in a MSW at Tampa Bay.

The well-named 3 year old colt KARNAK (Pioneerof the Nile) broke his maiden sprinting on the turf at Tampa Bay. He was a $350,000 yearling purchase for his trainer Arnaud Delacour.  He raced inside then bid and cleared to win by 1 1/4 lengths. In Aiken he got his start with Legacy Stables.

DREAM SHAKE misses by a head in the G2 Pat Day Mile

DREAM SHAKE got his early training with Cary Frommer on the Aiken Training Track. Cary sold him at OBS to part-owner Exline-Border Racing. DREAM SHAKE qualified for the Derby with 2 graded stakes placings, but trainer Peter Eurton opted for the Pat Day instead.  He raced just off the pace and engaged with the eventual winner in a wild stretch duel. He missed by a head. The fractions were FAST:  :21.75, 43.68.and six furlongs in 1:07.97. The final time was 1:34.39

Son of Palace Malice in the field for Saturday’s 147th Kentucky Derby

Entered in the 147th Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on Saturday is a competitor that will bring back some good memories for local horse racing fans.

Like the King, a son of Palace Malice, is among the 20 3-year-old thoroughbreds scheduled to run in the first leg of the Triple Crown.

Palace Malice was the Aiken-trained Horse of the Year in 2013 and 2014 while being campaigned by Dogwood Stable.

Aiken-trained Dream Shake won’t run in Kentucky Derby, will target another race instead

During the Triple Crown’s 2013 edition, Palace Malice finished a disappointing 12th in the Kentucky Derby, skipped the Preakness Stakes and then captured the Belmont Stakes by 3¼ lengths.

For Anne Campbell, whose late husband, Cot, was the founder and president of Dogwood, Palace Malice’s Kentucky Derby experience was one she would rather forget.

Instead of dropping back and racing in the middle of the pack early as expected, Campbell said, Palace Malice charged out of the starting gate and grabbed the lead.

With Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith aboard and wearing blinkers for the first time, Palace Malice completed a quarter mile in :22.57 and a half mile in :45.33.

In 1¼-mile race like the Kentucky Derby, such a fast pace was suicidal.

“It was just a disaster from the beginning,” Campbell said. “I remember thinking within the first few seconds, ‘Lord, we’ve lost it already.’ He was flying along on the front, and we knew it was all over.

“I just think he probably got way from Mike a little bit more than what Mike realized was going to happen,” she continued. “Then he (Mike) just kind of let him (Palace Malice) go. He didn’t check him. He just let him roll, and that was the end of it.”

An exhausted Palace Malice faded quickly from contention in the stretch.

“All of our friends said, ‘Oh, it was so exciting (to see Palace Malice on lead),’ and it was, but it also was devastating,” Campbell said.

In the Belmont, Palace Malice didn’t wear blinkers, which are designed to keep horses from becoming distracted, and he turned in a much, much better performance.

Campbell plans to watch the Kentucky Derby on Saturday and said she would be “pulling for” Like the King.

The colt has won three of his six career starts and has earned $200,680.

The late Cot Campbell’s enthusiasm for Aiken and racehorses was unbridled

His efforts earned him a victory by a length in the Jeff Ruby Steaks at Turfway Park in Kentucky on March 27 and a runner-up finish in the John Battaglia Memorial Stakes on Feb. 26 at Turfway.

Like the King is a 50-1 longshot on the Kentucky Derby’s morning line.

He will break from the No. 2 post position and be ridden by Drayden Van Dyke.

M Racing Group LLC owns Like the King, who is trained by Wesley Ward.

In 2020, Structor, another son of Palace Malice, captured the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Presented by Coolmore America at Santa Anita Park in California.

This year is the 40th anniversary of Aiken-trained Pleasant Colony’s victory in the Kentucky Derby.

Pleasant Colony, who also won the Preakness, but lost the Belmont Stakes, is a member of the Aiken Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame.

He was North America’s champion 3-year-old male thoroughbred in 1981.

Aiken trained EDIE MEENY MINY MO to try the Monmouth Oaks

EDIE MEENY MINY MO (Upstart) brought $400,000 for Cary Frommer at the 2020 Fasig Tipton Timonium sale. She made a good start for her owners Holly Hill Farm, winning by over 4 lengths in her first start. She hopped at the start but overcame that quickly to reach the front and stay there. The 3 year old filly is trained by  Miguel Vera. She raced 6 furlongs on the dirt at Pimlico.

Dream Shake, a colt that spent time at the Aiken Training Track, pictured here, won’t run in the May 1 Kentucky Derby. Instead, he is scheduled to compete in the Pat Day Mile on the same day at Churchill Downs.

The road to the May 1 Kentucky Derby ended Friday for an Aiken Training Track graduate.

But there are still plans for the 3-year-old thoroughbred to travel to Churchill Downs from his California base.

Dream Shake finishes third in Santa Anita Derby in California

Instead of participating in the 147th Run for the Roses, Dream Shake will compete in the Pat Day Mile on the same day at the track.

Churchill and other sources reported the decision, which the colt’s trainer, Peter Eurton, revealed Friday.

Earlier this week, Eurton told the Daily Racing Form that there was a 50-50 chance that Dream Shake would be entered in the Derby.

Aiken-trained Dream Shake set to run in Kentucky Derby prep race in California

Dream Shake had earned 30 points during his performances in Derby prep races. The total was enough for him to make it into the Run for the Roses’ 20-horse field, but he ranked low on a list where some of the 3-year-olds had accumulated 100 or more apiece.

A son of the stallion Twirling Candy, Dream Shake has a career record of one win in three starts, all at Santa Anita Park.

The colt captured a 6 ½-furlong maiden race by 4 ¾-lengths on Feb. 2.

Dream Shake then finished third in both the San Felipe Stakes on March 6 and the Runhappy Santa Anita Derby on April 4.

Cary Frommer trained Dream Shake while he was in Aiken.

The colt arrived at the Aiken Training Track after Foxpointe Thoroughbreds purchased him for $32,000 at the 2019 Keeneland September yearling sale in Kentucky.

Dream Shake remained under Frommer’s care until she offered him in her consignment at an Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. sale of 2-year-olds in training last June in Florida.

Marette Farrell purchased the colt for $75,000 for Exline-Border Racing.

Frommer specializes in buying young thoroughbreds as yearlings and reselling them as 2-year-olds but she never had any ownership interest in Dream Shake.

Exline-Border Racing currently owns Dream Shake in partnership with SAF Racing and Richard Hausman.

Frommer, who is a former Training Track president, couldn’t be reached for comment Friday about the latest development in Dream Shake’s racing career.

With multiple horses bowing out this week, the updated Kentucky Derby leaderboard released Friday by Churchill Downs has Dream Shake listed as in the field for the 1 ¼-miles classic on May 1. Whether the assignment is accepted, however, remains to be determined.

Trainer Peter Eurton told HRN on Friday that Dream Shake would work on Saturday at Santa Anita for the first time since finishing third in the Santa Anita Derby (G1) behind Rock Your World and Medina Spirit. It is scheduled to be a solo five-furlong drill under Flavien Prat, who was aboard in the Santa Anita Derby, but has the assignment on Hot Rod Charlie in the Kentucky Derby.

“I’m going to breeze tomorrow, then we’ll all sit down and make a decision,” Eurton said. “Probably the middle of next week.”

Dream Shake is already scheduled to ship to Churchill Downs the Tuesday before the Kentucky Derby. If the decision is made to bypass the main event, he would instead contest the $500,000 Pat Day Mile (G2) on the undercard, Eurton said.

Dream Shake is owned by a partnership that includes Exline-Border Racing, who in last year’s delayed Kentucky Derby was represented by Storm the Court, the champion 2-year-old of 2019 trained by Eurton. He finished sixth.

Also co-owned by SAF Racing and Richard Hausman, Dream Shake would be making just his fourth career start at Churchill Downs. The Twirling Candy colt was a splashy debut winner at Santa Anita on Feb. 7 and came back to be third behind Life is Good and Medina Spirit in the March 6 San Felipe (G2) at Santa Anita.

In the 1 1/8-miles Santa Anita Derby, Dream Shake was in the vanguard stalking pacesetter Rock Your World along the inside before flattening out in the stretch to finish 6 1/2-lengths adrift of the winner.

“I was pleased with both efforts,” Eurton said of Dream Shake’s runs in the San Felipe and Santa Anita Derby. “I thought he was stuck inside a little more than I would have like [in the Santa Anita Derby]. He runs much bigger when he’s outside. Other than that, I thought he had a relatively good trip and got a lot of education out of it. He’s still learning.”

Dream Shake would be Eurton’s third Kentucky Derby starter. In addition to Storm the Court, he also finished sixth in 2014 with Dance With Fate.

Churchill Downs’ lists Dream Shake among 16 horses ‘likely’ for the Kentucky Derby, which allows a maximum of 20 runners. The remaining four slots are open for Concert Tour, Caddo River, Highly Motivated and Crowded Trade. All four of those colts are listed as “possible.”

If any of those defect, waiting to slip-in in order of preference are O Besos, Get Her Number, King Fury, Hockey Dad and Keepmeinmind.

Dream Shake finishes third in Santa Anita Derby in California

By Dede Biles dbiles@aikenstandard.com

A win eluded Dream Shake in the $750,000 Runhappy Santa Anita Derby on Saturday.

But the colt that spent time at the Aiken Training Track when he was younger turned in a respectable effort.

He finished third in the Kentucky Derby prep race at Santa Anita Park in California.

Rock Your World, ridden by Umberto Rispoli, was the winner by 4¼ lengths. The 4-5 favorite, Medina Spirit, finished second, 2½ lengths in front of Dream Shake.

Sent off as the 5-1 third betting choice in the field of nine 3-year-old thoroughbreds, Rock Your World covered 11/8 miles in 1:49.17.

Dream Shake, with Flavien Prat aboard, was the second betting choice at 4-1.

The colt stalked the pace from the inside early but never was able to grab the lead from the front-running Rock Your World.

“We had a good trip,” said Prat, who added that Dream Shake “was traveling well and the race went well.”

The colt had to break from the post position closest to the rail after Roman Centurian, who was in the No. 1 post, was scratched.

It “was not the best spot,” Prat said.

Dream Shake has won once in three career races. In his last outing prior to the Santa Anita Derby, he finished third in the San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita.

Medina Spirit was the San Felipe runner-up.

Cary Frommer trained Dream Shake while he was in Aiken as a yearling and a 2-year-old.

Peter Eurton currently trains the colt for Exline-Border Racing LLC, SAF Racing and Richard Hausman.

Dream Shake has earned $162,600 during his career.

Foxpointe Thoroughbreds purchased the colt for $32,000 at the 2019 Keeneland September yearling sale in Kentucky and then he was sent to Frommer in Aiken.

Frommer, as agent, consigned Dream Shake last year to an Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. sale of 2-year-olds in training in June in Florida.

Marette Farrell purchased him for $75,000 for Exline-Border Racing.

Hronis Racing LLC and Talla Racing LLC’s Rock Your World was making his career debut on dirt in the Santa Anita Derby. He won his first two starts on grass.

Rock Your World came into the Santa Anita Derby off of a victory in the Pasadena Stakes on Feb. 27 at Santa Anita.

John Sadler is his trainer.
