VALUED NOTION (Great Notion) earned his first black-type in the  BEN’S CAT S. at  Pimlico, He splashed 5 furlongs on the main track when the race came off the turf. He raced forwardly inside for the win. He was started and conditioned by Cary Frommer.

EDIE MEENY MINY MO (f, 3, Upstart–Plum {SW, $128,440}, by
Pure Prize) continued a promising start to her career Sunday at
a somewhat surprising 3-1 while sporting blinkers for the first
time. A sharp :10 flat breezer at Fasig-Tipton Midlantic last year,
the dark bay debuted a 4 1/4-length winner in a waiver maiden
claimer (not in for the tag as the race condition is effectively a
state-bred maiden special weight plus open $40,000 maiden
claimer) here Apr. 23, and was flattered when two also-rans
from that heat came back to graduate and two more ran
second. With the money pouring in on Liv and Let Liv (Khozan), a
big-figure last-out winner at the level, Edie Meeny Miny Mo was
pushed along up the inside before getting shuffled back into the
turn. She made a nifty move along with the chalk as those two
took over approaching the stretch, but made quick work of her
more fancied rival to romp impressively. The winner has an
unraced 2-year-old half-brother named Gig (Bodemeister), a
yearling half-brother by Twirling Candy and a foal half-sister by

RIDIN FOR BIDEN wins 2nd in a row

RIDIN WITH BIDEN (c, 3, Constitution–Allemande, by Medaglia d’Oro), a debut runner-up in the local mud Dec. 23, disappointed when off the board in his next two tries, but put it together with a 5 1/4-length graduation last out here May 19. Knocked down to 4-5 favoritism in this first try against winners, the $85,000 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic buy pressed the pace from second through fractions of :23.4 and :47.2. Drawing on even terms straightening for home, the dark bay put away the pacesetter going by the eighth pole and held sway from late-running I Am Redeemed (Redeemed) for a one-length success.

The winner shares a second dam, four-time GSW Wild Heart Dancing (Farma Way), with Saturday’s GI Jackpocket Jaipur S. upsetter Casa Creed (Jimmy Creed) as well as this year’s GIII Kitten’s Joy S. hero Chess’s Dream (Jess’s Dream). His unraced dam is responsible for a juvenile Tonalist colt.

SHOOTERS SHOOT – sold by CARY  FROMMER for $300,000 –  2nd in G2 Triple Bend

SHOOTERS SHOOT  – sold by CARY  FROMMER for $300,000 –  added his first black-type rallying to be 2nd in the Triple Bend Stakes G2 at Santa Anita. See below for a nice write up in the TDN following an allowance victory.

SHOOTERS SHOOT  (c, 3, Competitive Edge–Repeat, by Bernardini) was a well-beaten second behind Baffert’s unbeaten buzzsaw Charlatan (Speightstown) at Santa Anita Feb. 16, then successfully stretched to two turns with a powerful maiden breaker in Arcadia last time Mar. 15. Off at 5-2 in this first attempt outside of Southern California, he was sent to the front from his inside draw, but was quickly greeted by favored Blackberry Wine (Oxbow), who has been a lightning rod for conversation since getting disqualified from a pair of wins for medication violations by trainer Joe Sharp while remaining eligible for this condition. Those two threw down through fractions of :23.10 and :45.87, and kept on sluggging it out down the stretch. Shooters Shoot wanted it just a little bit more and got the better of that rival by a neck in a race that didn=t deserve a loser. The winner=s dam, a half-sister to GIII Gotham S. winner J Boys Echo (Mineshaft), is also represented by the 2-year-old colt Black Legend (Gemologist) and a yearling colt by Will Take Charge. She was bred to Collected for the 2020 season.

KARNAK graduates in a MSW at Tampa Bay.

The well-named 3 year old colt KARNAK (Pioneerof the Nile) broke his maiden sprinting on the turf at Tampa Bay. He was a $350,000 yearling purchase for his trainer Arnaud Delacour.  He raced inside then bid and cleared to win by 1 1/4 lengths. In Aiken he got his start with Legacy Stables.

DREAM SHAKE misses by a head in the G2 Pat Day Mile

DREAM SHAKE got his early training with Cary Frommer on the Aiken Training Track. Cary sold him at OBS to part-owner Exline-Border Racing. DREAM SHAKE qualified for the Derby with 2 graded stakes placings, but trainer Peter Eurton opted for the Pat Day instead.  He raced just off the pace and engaged with the eventual winner in a wild stretch duel. He missed by a head. The fractions were FAST:  :21.75, 43.68.and six furlongs in 1:07.97. The final time was 1:34.39

Son of Palace Malice in the field for Saturday’s 147th Kentucky Derby

Entered in the 147th Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on Saturday is a competitor that will bring back some good memories for local horse racing fans.

Like the King, a son of Palace Malice, is among the 20 3-year-old thoroughbreds scheduled to run in the first leg of the Triple Crown.

Palace Malice was the Aiken-trained Horse of the Year in 2013 and 2014 while being campaigned by Dogwood Stable.

Aiken-trained Dream Shake won’t run in Kentucky Derby, will target another race instead

During the Triple Crown’s 2013 edition, Palace Malice finished a disappointing 12th in the Kentucky Derby, skipped the Preakness Stakes and then captured the Belmont Stakes by 3¼ lengths.

For Anne Campbell, whose late husband, Cot, was the founder and president of Dogwood, Palace Malice’s Kentucky Derby experience was one she would rather forget.

Instead of dropping back and racing in the middle of the pack early as expected, Campbell said, Palace Malice charged out of the starting gate and grabbed the lead.

With Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith aboard and wearing blinkers for the first time, Palace Malice completed a quarter mile in :22.57 and a half mile in :45.33.

In 1¼-mile race like the Kentucky Derby, such a fast pace was suicidal.

Son of Aiken’s Palace Malice captures Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf in California

“It was just a disaster from the beginning,” Campbell said. “I remember thinking within the first few seconds, ‘Lord, we’ve lost it already.’ He was flying along on the front, and we knew it was all over.

“I just think he probably got way from Mike a little bit more than what Mike realized was going to happen,” she continued. “Then he (Mike) just kind of let him (Palace Malice) go. He didn’t check him. He just let him roll, and that was the end of it.”

An exhausted Palace Malice faded quickly from contention in the stretch.

“All of our friends said, ‘Oh, it was so exciting (to see Palace Malice on lead),’ and it was, but it also was devastating,” Campbell said.

In the Belmont, Palace Malice didn’t wear blinkers, which are designed to keep horses from becoming distracted, and he turned in a much, much better performance.

Campbell plans to watch the Kentucky Derby on Saturday and said she would be “pulling for” Like the King.

The colt has won three of his six career starts and has earned $200,680.

The late Cot Campbell’s enthusiasm for Aiken and racehorses was unbridled

His efforts earned him a victory by a length in the Jeff Ruby Steaks at Turfway Park in Kentucky on March 27 and a runner-up finish in the John Battaglia Memorial Stakes on Feb. 26 at Turfway.

Like the King is a 50-1 longshot on the Kentucky Derby’s morning line.

He will break from the No. 2 post position and be ridden by Drayden Van Dyke.

M Racing Group LLC owns Like the King, who is trained by Wesley Ward.

In 2020, Structor, another son of Palace Malice, captured the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Presented by Coolmore America at Santa Anita Park in California.

This year is the 40th anniversary of Aiken-trained Pleasant Colony’s victory in the Kentucky Derby.

Pleasant Colony, who also won the Preakness, but lost the Belmont Stakes, is a member of the Aiken Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame.

He was North America’s champion 3-year-old male thoroughbred in 1981.

Aiken trained EDIE MEENY MINY MO to try the Monmouth Oaks

EDIE MEENY MINY MO (Upstart) brought $400,000 for Cary Frommer at the 2020 Fasig Tipton Timonium sale. She made a good start for her owners Holly Hill Farm, winning by over 4 lengths in her first start. She hopped at the start but overcame that quickly to reach the front and stay there. The 3 year old filly is trained by  Miguel Vera. She raced 6 furlongs on the dirt at Pimlico.
