Aiken prepared Edie Meeny Miny  Mo, an impressive winner of her only two starts, both sprints, looked to be clear after taking command coming out of the final turn in the Monmouth Oaks G3, but that’s when Leader of the Band launched her rally. Edie Meeny Miny Mo had taken the field through a half in :47.03, to three quarters in 1:11.36, and through the opening mile in 1:37.05. She had to settle for 2nd.

EDIE MEENY MINY MO (Upstart) brought $400,000 for Cary Frommer at the 2020 Fasig Tipton Timonium sale. She made a good start for her owners Holly Hill Farm, winning by over 4 lengths in her first start. She hopped at the start but overcame that quickly to reach the front and stay there. The 3 year old filly is trained by  Miguel Vera. She raced 6 furlongs on the dirt at Pimlico.

Undefeated Edie Meeny Miny Mo Steps Up in Monmouth Oaks

The Upstart filly has captured her first two starts by a combined 10 1/4 lengths.

Trainer Miguel Vera is fully aware of the challenges facing his 3-year-old filly Edie Meeny Miny Mo  in the July 31 Monmouth Oaks (G3) at Monmouth Park.

The daughter of Upstart has never been around two turns, nor has she ever tried any stakes company yet. And she’s the least experienced filly in the nine-horse field with just two career starts.

But Vera remains confident in her chances in the 1 1/16-mile contest for sophomore fillies for one important reason: Talent. Edie Meeny Miny Mo, he says, oozes it.

“It’s a big step up for her but she deserves this chance,” said Vera. “She has shown she has the potential to be a special horse.”

Holly Hill Stables’ Edie Meeny Miny Mo was unraced at 2, despite fetching a cool $400,000 from last year’s Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Sale.

The Maryland-bred filly was a head-turning debut winner April 23 at Pimlico Race Course, surging home to score by 4 1/4 lengths despite an awkward hop at the start. But her follow-up effort June 13 in a Pimlico allowance optional claimer bordered on dazzling. Edie Meeny Miny Mo annexed that six-furlong dash by six lengths despite being steadied around the far turn.

“I know there is a question about the distance since her only two races have been at six furlongs and she is trying a mile and a sixteenth now,” said the Maryland-based Vera. “I don’t think it will be a problem. I feel confident she can go that distance. She’s the kind of horse who can go a lot of different distances.

“I’m impressed by what she has done but not surprised by it. She showed she had talent from day one.”

A further endorsement of the filly’s ability: Victor Espinoza is coming in to ride. It is the only mount he has scheduled on the 12-race card.

“I’m very confident in her,” said Vera. “I think she is a real race horse. We’re going to find out more on Saturday. But she has always shown she should be in these kind of races.

“It’s a great race to see where we are with her.”

For Vera, who has been training since 2011, Edie Meeny Mino Mo also represents the chance for an elusive graded stakes victory. He has yet to get one.

“It would mean a lot to me,” he said. “But just to be in this kind of race, any graded race, is awesome. She has shown me the potential to be the best horse I have ever had.”

The 97th edition of the Monmouth Oaks also features a solid pair of John Servis-trainees in Midnight Obsession  and Leader of the Band . They ran second and third, respectively, in the July 3 Delaware Oaks (G3) in their last start.

Cherokee Run) showed a few lively drills at his trainer’s Fair Hill
base for this career bow, punctuated by a five-furlong bullet in
1:00 flat (1/10) July 6, and was made a 28-5 proposition. Sixth
off of dueling leaders through a sizzling :22.32 quarter, the
$185,000 Fasig-TIpton Selected Yearling buy was shuffled back
two places as the tempo moderated through a :46.99 half.
Saving ground while patiently handled on the far bend, the
long-striding bay bravely squeezed through a narrow rail
opening at the furlong grounds and bounded clear to a sharp
2 1/2-length graduation over longshot Speaking Scout (Mr
Speaker). The second winner for his freshman sire (by Pioneerof
the Nile), Electrostatic is a half to Colonel Sharp (Colonel John),
MSW & GSP, $376,384. His second dam is seven-time
Grade I-winning multimillionaire Sharp Cat (Storm Cat), herself a
half to MGISW and sire Royal Anthem (Theatrical {Ire}). Extra
Sharp has a yearling Dialed In colt and produced a filly by

In the first,  SAN MARCO (Tonalist) owned and trained by Margaret Alexander stalked the pace in second and cleared to break his maiden going 1 1/16 on the turf in a MSW. One race later on the card, MY BOY PADDY (Paddy O’Prado) came from way out of it – full of steam – to win an allowance race at a mile and seventy on the dirt. Pure Prize) continued a promising start to her career Sunday at
a somewhat surprising 3-1 while sporting blinkers for the first
time. A sharp :10 flat breezer at Fasig-Tipton Midlantic last year,
the dark bay debuted a 4 1/4-length winner in a waiver maiden
claimer (not in for the tag as the race condition is effectively a
state-bred maiden special weight plus open $40,000 maiden
claimer) here Apr. 23, and was flattered when two also-rans
from that heat came back to graduate and two more ran
second. With the money pouring in on Liv and Let Liv (Khozan), a
big-figure last-out winner at the level, Edie Meeny Miny Mo was
pushed along up the inside before getting shuffled back into the
turn. She made a nifty move along with the chalk as those two
took over approaching the stretch, but made quick work of her
more fancied rival to romp impressively. The winner has an
unraced 2-year-old half-brother named Gig (Bodemeister), a
yearling half-brother by Twirling Candy and a foal half-sister by

RIDIN WITH BIDEN (c, 3, Constitution–Allemande, by Medaglia d’Oro), a debut runner-up in the local mud Dec. 23, disappointed when off the board in his next two tries, but put it together with a 5 1/4-length graduation last out here May 19. Knocked down to 4-5 favoritism in this first try against winners, the $85,000 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic buy pressed the pace from second through fractions of :23.4 and :47.2. Drawing on even terms straightening for home, the dark bay put away the pacesetter going by the eighth pole and held sway from late-running I Am Redeemed (Redeemed) for a one-length success.

The winner shares a second dam, four-time GSW Wild Heart Dancing (Farma Way), with Saturday’s GI Jackpocket Jaipur S. upsetter Casa Creed (Jimmy Creed) as well as this year’s GIII Kitten’s Joy S. hero Chess’s Dream (Jess’s Dream). His unraced dam is responsible for a juvenile Tonalist colt.

SHOOTERS SHOOT  – sold by CARY  FROMMER for $300,000 –  added his first black-type rallying to be 2nd in the Triple Bend Stakes G2 at Santa Anita. See below for a nice write up in the TDN following an allowance victory.

SHOOTERS SHOOT  (c, 3, Competitive Edge–Repeat, by Bernardini) was a well-beaten second behind Baffert’s unbeaten buzzsaw Charlatan (Speightstown) at Santa Anita Feb. 16, then successfully stretched to two turns with a powerful maiden breaker in Arcadia last time Mar. 15. Off at 5-2 in this first attempt outside of Southern California, he was sent to the front from his inside draw, but was quickly greeted by favored Blackberry Wine (Oxbow), who has been a lightning rod for conversation since getting disqualified from a pair of wins for medication violations by trainer Joe Sharp while remaining eligible for this condition. Those two threw down through fractions of :23.10 and :45.87, and kept on sluggging it out down the stretch. Shooters Shoot wanted it just a little bit more and got the better of that rival by a neck in a race that didn=t deserve a loser. The winner=s dam, a half-sister to GIII Gotham S. winner J Boys Echo (Mineshaft), is also represented by the 2-year-old colt Black Legend (Gemologist) and a yearling colt by Will Take Charge. She was bred to Collected for the 2020 season.
