The road to the May 1 Kentucky Derby ended Friday for an Aiken Training Track graduate.

But there are still plans for the 3-year-old thoroughbred to travel to Churchill Downs from his California base.

Instead of participating in the 147th Run for the Roses, Dream Shake will compete in the Pat Day Mile on the same day at the track.

Churchill and other sources reported the decision, which the colt’s trainer, Peter Eurton, revealed Friday.

Earlier this week, Eurton told the Daily Racing Form that there was a 50-50 chance that Dream Shake would be entered in the Derby.

Dream Shake had earned 30 points during his performances in Derby prep races. The total was enough for him to make it into the Run for the Roses’ 20-horse field, but he ranked low on a list where some of the 3-year-olds had accumulated 100 or more apiece.

A son of the stallion Twirling Candy, Dream Shake has a career record of one win in three starts, all at Santa Anita Park.

The colt captured a 6 ½-furlong maiden race by 4 ¾-lengths on Feb. 2.

Dream Shake then finished third in both the San Felipe Stakes on March 6 and the Runhappy Santa Anita Derby on April 4.

Cary Frommer trained Dream Shake while he was in Aiken.

The colt arrived at the Aiken Training Track after Foxpointe Thoroughbreds purchased him for $32,000 at the 2019 Keeneland September yearling sale in Kentucky.

Dream Shake remained under Frommer’s care until she offered him in her consignment at an Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. sale of 2-year-olds in training last June in Florida.

Marette Farrell purchased the colt for $75,000 for Exline-Border Racing.

Frommer specializes in buying young thoroughbreds as yearlings and reselling them as 2-year-olds but she never had any ownership interest in Dream Shake.

Exline-Border Racing currently owns Dream Shake in partnership with SAF Racing and Richard Hausman.

Frommer, who is a former Training Track president, couldn’t be reached for comment Friday about the latest development in Dream Shake’s racing career.

A win eluded Dream Shake in the $750,000 Runhappy Santa Anita Derby on Saturday.

But the colt that spent time at the Aiken Training Track when he was younger turned in a respectable effort.

He finished third in the Kentucky Derby prep race at Santa Anita Park in California.

Rock Your World, ridden by Umberto Rispoli, was the winner by 4¼ lengths. The 4-5 favorite, Medina Spirit, finished second, 2½ lengths in front of Dream Shake.

Sent off as the 5-1 third betting choice in the field of nine 3-year-old thoroughbreds, Rock Your World covered 11/8 miles in 1:49.17.

Dream Shake, with Flavien Prat aboard, was the second betting choice at 4-1.

The colt stalked the pace from the inside early but never was able to grab the lead from the front-running Rock Your World.

“We had a good trip,” said Prat, who added that Dream Shake “was traveling well and the race went well.”

The colt had to break from the post position closest to the rail after Roman Centurian, who was in the No. 1 post, was scratched.

It “was not the best spot,” Prat said.

Dream Shake has won once in three career races. In his last outing prior to the Santa Anita Derby, he finished third in the San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita.

Medina Spirit was the San Felipe runner-up.

Cary Frommer trained Dream Shake while he was in Aiken as a yearling and a 2-year-old.

Peter Eurton currently trains the colt for Exline-Border Racing LLC, SAF Racing and Richard Hausman.

Dream Shake has earned $162,600 during his career.

Foxpointe Thoroughbreds purchased the colt for $32,000 at the 2019 Keeneland September yearling sale in Kentucky and then he was sent to Frommer in Aiken.

Frommer, as agent, consigned Dream Shake last year to an Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. sale of 2-year-olds in training in June in Florida.

Hronis Racing LLC and Talla Racing LLC’s Rock Your World was making his career debut on dirt in the Santa Anita Derby. He won his first two starts on grass.

Rock Your World came into the Santa Anita Derby off of a victory in the Pasadena Stakes on Feb. 27 at Santa Anita.

A colt that spent time at the Aiken Training Track is entered in a major prep race for the Kentucky Derby.

Dream Shake will break from the No. 2 post position Saturday in the $750,000 Runhappy Santa Anita Derby at Santa Anita Park in California.

Flavien Prat will be his rider.

Based on Dream Shake’s 7-2 morning line odds, he is the second betting choice in the field of 10 3-year-old thoroughbreds.

The favorite, at 5-2, for the 1⅛-mile race is Medina Spirit.

That colt finished second in the 1 1/16-mile San Felipe Stakes on March 6 at Santa Anita.

Life Is Good, the winner, beat Medina Spirit by eight lengths.

Bob Baffert, a member of thoroughbred racing’s Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs, New York, trains both Life Is Good and Medina Spirit.

An ankle injury discovered after a March 20 workout sidelined Life Is Good, who recently underwent surgery.

Dream Shake was third in the San Felipe, finishing 2¼ lengths behind Medina Spirit.

As a 20-1 longshot in his career debut, Dream Shake cruised to victory on Feb. 7 at Santa Anita.

He won the 6 ½-furlong race by 4¾–lengths.

Cary Frommer was Dream Shake’s trainer when he was at the Aiken Training Track.

He arrived there after Foxpointe Thoroughbreds purchased him for $32,000 at the 2019 Keeneland September yearling sale in Kentucky.

At first, Dream Shake didn’t impress Frommer.

“He was very big and ‘growthy’ and awkward,” she said. “He was not attractive.”

But her opinion of the colt changed when Dream Shake breezed for the first time, which means he galloped at a much faster than usual pace for a short distance.

“He was a lovely mover,” Frommer said. “He just skimmed across the ground.”

That was early in 2020.

Not long afterward, Dream Shake’s physical appearance started to improve.

“He actually turned into quite a handsome boy,” Frommer said. “He changed from an ugly duckling into a swan.”

Frommer is known in the thoroughbred business as a pinhooker who buys and then resells young horses at public auctions.

But she didn’t have an ownership interest in Dream Shake.

The colt was offered in Frommer’s consignment in June of last year at an Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. sale of 2-year-olds in training in Florida.

Prior to the auction, Dream Shake worked an eighth of a mile in 10⅕ seconds.

A minor physical flaw, which could be seen on X-rays, prevented the colt from bringing more money, Frommer believes.

NBC Sports will televise the Santa Anita Derby on Saturday as part of its “Road to Kentucky Derby” series during a two-hour program that will begin at 5:30 p.m. on NBCSN.

The 147th Kentucky Derby will be held May 1 at Churchill Downs.
